That's because Windows hides the AppData folder by default, and you have to ‘unhide' it before you can see it. If Chrome support have told you where the folder is you need to rename, and you've found it, then it should be safe to rename it. If you do, then you must reset them. I've never tried hijacking the links Windows created by default so I don't really know if they continue to function correctly after they've been taken over.
