It was always open when the 'waiting for cache appeared', but it is nearly always running. It's not disk IO related, I think it's something cached in the network stack. I thought I was going to have to reinstall Windows, but now am somewhat certain it is this Chrome issue. It feels to me (very unscientifically) that Chromium is thinking I have more memory available than I really do and starts thrashing when it gets overextended. I continue to have this problem after an upgrade to Ubuntu 14.10 (and Chromium 38). 2. Lockups for around a minute are the norm while using Chrome and that is ultimately why I had to kick it to the curb.
